These pages are dedicated to the life and work of composers of art music whose families originated from Greek communities or territories of the late Ottoman Empire. The information provided serves the ultimate purpose of developing a register of Greek musicians’ archives and collections held in Europe, within the framework of a post-doctoral research project funded by the Greek State Scholarship Foundation I.K.Y. between January 2015 and January 2017. This project highlighted Greece’s vital and creative participation in shaping Continental art music before the First World War and was entitled ‘Composing Art Music from East to West in The Long Nineteenth Century: The Case of Stamaty, Lalas, and Riadis.’ It was conducted in collaboration with Dr Kostas Kardamis and other scholars from the Hellenic Music Research Lab of the Ionian University in Corfu, Greece, and also owes particular gratitude to George Athanasopoulos, Elizabeth Mela-Athanasopoulou, George Leotsakos, Maria Aslanidi, Smaro Anagnostopoulou, Dimitris Iwannou, Antonis Kontogeorgiou, and Xenia Theodoridou for their help with translating and locating research materials and sources of information.
